San Jose Garden

San Jose. CA | 2025

A redwood fence frame defines the canvas of this intimate garden, acting as both its threshold and its boundary. Designed for a mature couple with deep East Asian roots, the project transforms a neglected unused space into a layered sanctuary of bloom, fragrance, and seasonal rhythm.

At the heart of the garden stands an existing Magnolia soulangeana, an ancient tree whose tulip-like flowers emerge twice a year: first in a dramatic leafless bloom, then again within its full summer canopy.

Camellias and crape myrtles crown the upper canopy, bringing the couple’s favorite spring colors in generous abundance. A curved layout orchestrates planting density across the space, ascending from open borders toward a richer, more sheltered background, creating depth and a sense of discovery within a modest footprint.
Edible evergreen shrubs, including blueberries, weave sensory layers into the garden’s experience. A series of raised planters elevates the growing beds for improved horticultural performance, inviting the couple to cultivate at a comfortable height year-round.

At the center of the terrace, an operable pergola roof responds to the seasons, opening to welcome winter sun and closing against summer heat, framing the barbecue area as an outdoor living room for all seasons. This garden is designed to offer calm, contemplation, and gentle joy to its keepers for years to come.
