Montgomery Woods

Ukiah, California | 2023
As the Senior Associate and Project Manager for JNRA, Daniela Peña Corvillon collaborated on the design and oversaw the SD phase execution of this project for subsequent implementation by California State Parks.

Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve, a 2,700-acre old-growth coast redwood forest in Mendocino County, is undergoing significant trail improvements. The existing trail system, damaged by flooding and uncontrolled foot traffic, has been harming tree roots and eroding the forest habitat.

California State Parks has redesigned the over two-mile perimeter trail, moving it above the floodplain to protect the ecosystem while enhancing visitor experience. Save the Redwoods League and California State Parks enlisted us to develop schematic plans for a visitor gathering area and a mid-valley creek crossing. Our schematic plan, incorporating boardwalks, a bridge, seating areas, and interpretive signage, has been integrated into the larger trail improvement project.

This renovation aims to balance human access with habitat protection, offering a safer and more enriching experience for visitors while preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of this hidden redwood gem.
